The mythological and religious importance of Haridwar is well known. It is regarded as the "Sasural" of lord Shiva. Spending even one night in Haridwar is equivalent to the "Punya" (benefit, blessing) of gifting a 1000 sacred cows.
In the tradition of Bhagirath, devout Hindus stand in the sacred waters, praying for salvation of their departed elders with much pomp and splendour.'Ardh Kumbh' and 'Kumbh mela' are held every 6th and 12th year ,where a larger number of pilgrims and devotees converge to commemorate these divine events.
Haridwar is a pilgrimage center with many temples like Chandi devi, Mansa devi, daksha and revered Ashrams.
It is also famous for intricate decorative handcraft items , costume jewellery and beautifully carved stone idols and statues.
